Corryocactus brevistylus is a species of plant in the genus Corryocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet brevistylus means 'short column'. Spanish common names are "Chona", "Guacalla" and "Sancayo".

Corryocactus brevistylus grows with richly branched shoots from the base with heights of 2 to 5 meters and forms large groups. The dark green to light green to yellowish green shoots have a diameter of 12 to 15 centimeters. There are six to eight occasionally very noticeable ribs . The approximately 15 initially brownish thorns become lighter later. They are very uneven and usually 1 to 3 inches long. However, some of them are eight to eight inches long.

The broad, funnel-shaped, golden yellow, fragrant flowers are up to 9 centimeters long and 6 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The spherical, greenish fruits are initially thorny and reach a diameter of 7 to 10 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Corryocactus brevistylus is distributed in southern Peru and northern Chile at altitudes above 2000 meters.

It was first described as Cereus brevistylus in 1913 by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in the genus Corryocactus in 1920 .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Corryocactus brevistylus subsp. brevistylus
  • Corryocactus brevistylus subsp. puquiensis (Rauh & Backeb.) Ostolaza

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
