Paul Westrich

Paul West Rich (* 26. July 1947 in Kindsbach ) is a German naturalist who on entomology specializes.

Life

Westrich studied biology at the University of Tübingen from 1970 , where he also received his doctorate in  1979. rer. nat. took place. In his professional life, he focused on researching wild bees . Today he does research at the Institute for Apiculture and Nature Conservation in Kusterdingen .

In his fundamental work Die Wildbienen Baden-Württemberg , which appeared in 1989, Westrich described 446 bee species that occur in Germany. On behalf of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation , he and colleagues from other federal states developed the Red List for Germany's wild bees published in June 1998. Since 2008 he has published the journal Eucera on wild bees .

His richly illustrated work Die Wildbienen Deutschlands , published in 2018, summarizes all knowledge on this topic on over 800 pages. In 565 profiles it compiles everything worth knowing about the distribution, biology and flight time of native species and provides comprehensive information about habitats, way of life, beneficiaries and opponents of wild bees. The interaction between bees and flowers is extensively documented.

Honors

On March 18, 1999, the German Society for General and Applied Entomology honored Westrich with the award of the Meigen Medal .
