Holger Heinrich Dathe (mostly Holger H. Dathe ; born June 29, 1945 in Gettengrün ) is a German zoologist . In accordance with his training and academic qualifications, he worked as a behavioral biologist and animal physiologist . As an entomologist , he does research in the field of hymenoptera . From 1993 to 2010, Dathe was director of the German Entomological Institute (DEI) in Müncheberg , which has been part of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research (SGN), an institute of the Leibniz Association, in Frankfurt am Main since 2009 . Until 2013 he was editor of the journals Contributions to Entomology and Nova Supplementa Entomologica . In 1999 he founded the Insect of the Year Board of Trustees (Germany).

Life

Dathe is the son of Heinrich Dathe , the longtime director of the Berlin Zoo . He studied biology at the Humboldt University in Berlin and obtained his doctorate in 1972 under Günter Tembrock on the bioacoustics and chronobiology of crickets . In 1980 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the physics and physiology of bird flight , which he wrote at the research center for vertebrate research located in Tierpark Berlin . In 1986 he received a university professorship (Humboldt University Berlin) and in 1987 an academy professorship for animal physiology .

Since 1994 he has worked at the successor institutions of the German Entomological Institute, whose re-establishment he organized, and which he was head of until 2010. His scientific work areas are systematics, taxonomy , zoogeography and species protection in hymenoptera , especially the bees of the Palearctic and Africa.
