Paul Wurster (born April 13, 1926 in Pfullingen ; † March 28, 1994 ) was a German geologist. He was professor and director of the Geological Institute at the University of Bonn .

life and work

Wurster went to school in Tübingen and studied at the University of Tübingen and in Bonn, where he received his doctorate in 1959 under Roland Brinkmann with a thesis on the detection of cross-layer structures. He then went to the Geological Institute of the University of Hamburg, where he qualified as a professor in 1964 ( geology of the reed sandstone ) and became a private lecturer. From 1964 he worked at the University of Munich (where he became scientific advisor in 1966) and from 1968 full professor in Bonn. In 1991 he retired.

Wurster became particularly known for his monograph on the reed sandstone of the middle Keuper (his habilitation). He showed that it was filled up as shallow water sediment from a delta from the north, in contrast to earlier directions of transport, for example in the age of red sandstone. In preparation for this, he examined in his dissertation the measurement of cross-layer structures with the possibility of differentiating tidal effects and formation in rivers. He also examined the formation of ring dunes in the area around the Laacher volcano in the Eifel and demonstrated volcanic formation.

In 1964 he received the Hermann Credner Prize and in 1988 the Hans Stille Medal .
