Paul Louis Auguste Warnier de Wailly (born May 16, 1854 in Amiens , † June 18, 1933 in Paris ) was a French composer .

Life

Paul de Wailly grew up in the Bagatelle Castle in Abbeville . He lost his father, a naval officer, at the age of seven. He began to compose at the age of 17 and became a student of César Franck . In 1900 he married Marthe de Maricourt (who died in 1918). At the beginning of the 20th century, de Wailly held regular concerts in the Bagatelle Castle. During the First World War he took over the management of Abbeville Hospital.

Paul de Wailly composed orchestral works (including several symphonies), chamber music (including a piano quintet in F minor, Op. 15 from 1895), organ works and vocal compositions. In 1924 the drame lyrique L'Apôtre was performed at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées . The majority of his compositions, however, were written by 1900. They are in the late romantic tradition of César Franck. He was opposed to contemporary trends at the beginning of the 20th century, such as the music of Ravel or Stravinsky .
