Paulsmühle (also called Benrath-Ost ) was a district of the former city of Benrath , which was incorporated into Düsseldorf in 1929 . Paulsmühle is now an unofficial quarter within the Düsseldorf district of Benrath. Paulsmühle is bordered by the A59 to the east, by Münchener Straße and the railway line to the west, by Forststraße to the north and by Bundesstraße 228 to the south.

history

Paulsmühle was created with the establishment of the watermill of the same name, which once belonged to Benrath Castle . The founder of the mill was probably called Paul. The mill stood in the area of the eastern Paulsmühlenstraße, on the edge of the forest.

It was a water mill that was powered by water from the Itter and the Mönchgraben coming from Hilden . The first mill ditch was branched off from Itter in the area of Horster Allee and led in the direction of the mill, the second mill ditch was branched off in the area of the street "Am Buchholzerbusch" and then ran directly on today's A 59 , also in the direction of the watermill. The Pauls-Mühle received enough water to start operations. Today a fountain made of three stylized millstones on the corner of Paulmühlenstrasse and Telleringstrasse reminds of the mill.

With the construction of the new, today's Benrath Castle in the years 1755/56, most of the water from the Itter was needed to feed the new ponds and ponds of the castle and thus withdrawn from the mill. The monk's pit alone was no longer sufficient to keep operations going. A few years later the mill also disappeared. The mill trenches and the Mönchgraben have been without water since the general drainage (after 1945) and straightening of the Itter. You can still see some of the trenches in the Benrath Forest today.

Some residential buildings have already been built in the area of the mill, but only with industrialization (companies such as Capito, A. Friedr. Flender , Tellering , Klein, Demag , Krupp) does the actual development of the former Benrath district of Paulsmühle begin. Numerous workers' apartments and settlements were built. The northern area of the “Am Wald” road is particularly interesting here. There are residential buildings in the Swabian style. After the Second World War , bourgeois residential buildings were also built.

In 1929 Benrath was incorporated into the city of Düsseldorf. The Paulsmühle district did not become an independent district of Düsseldorf. Today it belongs to the Düsseldorf district of Düsseldorf-Benrath and is known as Benrath-Ost.

In 1973 the Paulsmühle was expanded to include the cottage settlement on Mönchgraben. In the early 2000s, numerous rental properties from the Deutsche Annington portfolio were sold to private owners in Paulsmühle and subsequently renovated.

The foundation stone for the new Albrecht-Dürer-Schule , vocational college of the city of Düsseldorf (usually called Albrecht-Dürer-Kolleg for short ), took place in September 2016. With the demolition of the old BEA company building, the construction of the mill district began in early 2017. The completion of 400 new apartments is planned for 2019.
