Paulus Juusten
Paulus Juusten (* around 1516 in Juustila near Wiborg ; † August 22, 1575 in Turku ) was Bishop of Wiborg and Turku in Finland . He is considered one of the most important Finnish church leaders of the Reformation .
Life
Juusten was born into a middle-class family from Wiborg. He was ordained a priest around 1540. He worked as a chaplain to Bishop Martin Skytte and was a school principal in Wiborg. 1543 he traveled to Wittenberg in Germany and studied at the climate of the Reformation University of Wittenberg theology and one of the few Finnish students at the university. The lectures were mainly given by Philipp Melanchton . Melanchton then gave Juusten a letter of recommendation to King Gustav I Wasa and the Turku Cathedral Chapter after completing his studies in 1546 .
He returned to Finland and became rector of the Turku Cathedral School, where the Finnish priest formation took place. In 1554 Juusten became the first bishop of the diocese of Wiborg, which was newly created after the division of the Finnish diocese . In 1563 he became bishop of Turku. He held this office until his death.
Around 1565 he compiled and edited a collection of older Finnish episcopal chronicles with the title Catalogus et ordinaria successio episcoporum Finlandensium . It was completed and edited by Henrik Gabriel Porthan more than a century later . The work led to Juusten being considered the father of Finnish historiography.
In 1574 he published a catechism in Finnish . A Finnish missal followed in 1575 .
