Pawel Georgijewitsch Pegow ( Russian Павел Георгиевич Пегов ; born November 29, 1956 in Ulan-Ude ) is a former speed skater.

Career

Pegow studied at the East Siberian Technological Institute Ulan-Ude and was trained there by Nina Alexejewna Bobrowa for ten years. After achieving top performances in the world, the Soviet national coach Pegow's training took over. His first successes were the 4th places over 1000 and 500 m at the USSR Championships in 1980. In 1981 and 1982 he took top places in the national competition and won the 1000 m distance at the Winter Spartakiad of Peoples in Diwnigorsk before Sergei Chlebnikow , Anatoli Medennikow and Viktor Schawerin .

At the Sprint World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 Pawel Pegow finished second behind the Japanese Akira Kuroiwa . In March 1983 he was able to break the two-year-old world record of Yevgeny Kulikow over 50 m in Medeo with 36.68 s . Only one day later he improved the world record again - this time he ran 36.57 s. On the same weekend he ran a perfect 1000 m race and was the first speed skater to stay under 1: 13.00 with 1: 12.58. This world record lasted 10 years and was only officially improved by Kevin Scott on December 17, 1993 . In addition to the world records over 500 m and 1000 m, Pavel Pegov also set a new world record in the sprint all-around (2 × 500 m, 2 × 1000 m) this weekend.

He could not repeat the successes of the 1983 season. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , where he started as the favorite, he only finished 13th over 1000 m. He was also followed by Lospech and had to run the distance without an opponent. In 1985 Pegow ended his career.
