Pedro Bank

The Pedro Bank is a coral bank around 80 kilometers off the south coast of Jamaica . It consists mainly of corals, the bottom is covered with extensive fields of seagrass .
8040 km², which corresponds almost to the area of Jamaica, are less than 100 meters deep, a large part is between 13 and 30 meters from the sea surface. On the flanks, the ground drops down to 800 meters. In the eastern part are the Pedro Cays , one of Jamaica's two offshore island groups with an area of around 27 hectares . They are part of the submarine Nicaragua Ridge , which stretches from Nicaragua to Jamaica.
The bank and the cays have become a major tourist destination in recent years . As one of the last natural areas , it has been largely preserved intact. Large parts are under nature protection and are monitored by a ranger station on the cays.
