The Pedro Cays are a group of islands within the Pedro Bank . They belong to the national territory of Jamaica , from whose south coast they are 97 kilometers away.

The Pedro Cays are administratively counted to Kingston Parish .

geography

The cays consist of four islands, Northeast Cay , Middle Cay , Southwest Cay and South Cay with an area between 15.2 and 0.2 hectares . They are overgrown with bushes and some trees. Turtles and birds use them to lay their eggs. In the north of the main island Northeast Cay is the Pedro Cays Lighthouse .

Three smaller rocks ( corallenooliths ) protrude 50 to 60 cm from the water:

  • Portland Rock (also Eastern Pedro Cay)
  • Blower rock
  • Shannon Rock

There are also a number of small submarine rocks on Pedro Bank, such as Banner Reef, Southwest Rock, Willsteed Rock, Doyle Shoal and Powell Knoll.

The The Morant and Pedro Cays Act of 1975, which includes the Morant Cays is concerned, one of the first environmental laws of Jamaica. To comply with the regulations, a Jamaica Defense Force Coast Guard station was set up on Middle Cay . Otherwise the islands are uninhabited. Tourist access is restricted, as is fishing.

The main islands are surrounded by coral reefs and extensive seagrass fields .
