Pedro Martínez (missionary)

Pedro Martínez (born 1542 in Coimbra Portugal ; died in Malacca on February 18, 1598 ) was a Spanish Augustinian missionary in Japan during the Muromachi period .

life and work

Pedro Martínez was born in Coimbra but grew up in America, where his father was the sixth viceroy of New Spain and Peru. After his return to Spain he joined the Augustinian order. In 1591 he was appointed Bishop of Japan. He was ordained in Goa in 1595 and came to Nagasaki in August 1596 and became Bishop of Funai on Kyushu . He immediately went to Kyoto to deliver gifts from the Viceroy of India, Dom Matias de Albuquerque , to the current ruler in Japan, Toyotomi Hideyoshi . Hideyoshi received him kindly. On his return to Nagasaki on February 5, 1597, he witnessed the crucifixion of the 26 martyrs .

Martínez traveled to Goa at the end of 1597 to arrange a few things there. He fell ill on the way, died and was buried in Malacca .
