Pedro Novais (born July 7, 1930 in Coelho Neto , Maranhão ) is a Brazilian politician. He was tourism minister in Dilma Rousseff's cabinet and belongs to the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro .

Life and becoming

Novais studied law at the University of Espirito Santo and completed internships in tax law in London and planning and tax administration in Washington. In 1978 he was elected member of the Legislature of Maranhão State for the Aliança Renovadora Nacional (ARENA) . In 1982 he was a member of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) congressman for his home state in the Chamber of Deputies in Brasília and was re-elected for five more legislative terms. Designated in December 2010, he took office as Minister of Tourism under the government of Dilma Rousseff, but was only able to hold this position for nine months.

On September 14, 2011, he announced his resignation as Minister of Tourism. It was the fifth resignation since Dilma Rousseff took office on January 1, 2011. The Folha de S. Paulo newspaper reported that he had paid a private employee for seven years with state money. In addition, an employee of the Parliament had been assigned as a chauffeur for his wife.
