Pegasus World Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pegasus World Cup is an American horse race for thoroughbreds that was first held on January 28, 2017 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida . The flat race for 4 year olds and older horses is held on a sand track over a distance of 1800 meters. It has been classified as a Group I race by Donn Handicap . With a total of 12 million US dollars in prizes for the first edition in 2017, the Pegasus World Cup surpassed the Dubai World Cup as the most highly endowed horse race in the world. In 2018 the winnings were increased to $ 16 million, but decreased to $ 9 million in 2019.

The race owes its name to the statue of a winged horse , a Pegasus from Greek mythology , at the entrance to the Gulfstream Park racecourse.

Frank Stronach first presented the idea for the Pegasus World Cup at the Thoroughbred Owners Conference in Gulfstream in January 2016. A few months before the race, the twelve starting positions are sold for one million dollars each. The racing stables and owners can buy a starting place without specifying the horse's name, they can also swap, rent or sell the starting place. The $ 12 million collected in this way will be divided as follows: $ 7 million for the winner, $ 1.75 million for the runner-up, $ 1 million for the third and $ 250,000 for the fourth to twelfth place. Two horses can be named in advance for each starting place. A named horse that does not start the Pegasus World Cup will be approved for the Poseidon Stakes , a race specially launched for this purpose. This race will be run under similar conditions and will have prizes of $ 400,000 with a starting place price of $ 20,000.
