Peirates hybridus is a species of bug from the family of predatory bugs (Reduviidae).

features

The bugs are 12.5 to 14.5 millimeters long. The pronotum of the black and orange-red colored animals has a constriction on the rear third. The abdomen is colored red in the center below. The hemielytres have black spots. Their membrane is blackish. They have strong thickenings on the thighs ( femora ) of the front and middle legs. The splints ( tibia ) also have adhesive pads made of dense hairs ("fossula sponginosa")

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed from the Caucasus through Southeastern Europe and Asia Minor to the whole of the Mediterranean area and southern Central Europe. It occurs in Germany only in the southwest in the Upper Rhine Graben up to about the Main line and is only proven here by individual, older finds. The species occurs everywhere in Austria, but is rare. Very dry and hot, stony, open habitats are settled, especially limestone grasslands.

Way of life

Peirates hybridus lives on the ground and hunts nocturnal, similar to the sickle bugs of the genus Prostemma, predominantly to exclusively other bugs. They grab their prey with their front and middle legs. During the day the animals hide under stones, dead wood or in plant rosettes. They overwinter as adults. The nymphs appear in June and July, and occasionally into autumn. Adult animals can be seen from March to early May and the new generation from late July to October. Its sting is painful for several hours in humans, but less severe than a bee sting.
