Pekka Sulkunen

Pekka Sulkunen (born July 15, 1948 in Jyväskylä ) is a Finnish sociologist who teaches as a professor at the University of Helsinki . From 2011 to 2013 he was President of the European Sociological Association . His research interests are mainly in social science addiction research and the consumer society .

Sulkunen completed his studies in sociology in 1972 with a master's degree at the University of Helsinki and received his doctorate there in 1980 . This was followed by a study visit to France ( Collège de France and École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales ). He then worked at the Social Research Institute for Alcohol Studies at the University of Helsinki, from 1983 to 1986 as director. This was followed by teaching activities at various Finnish universities. Sulkunen has been a professor at the University of Helsinki since 2000.
