Pekka Taisto Lehtinen (born April 5, 1934 in Parainen ) is a Finnish arachnologist and retired curator of the Zoological Museum of the University of Turku .

Life

In 1952, Pekka Lehtinen graduated from a high school in Turku. After an exceptionally short study of two and a half years, he obtained his Masters degree from the University of Turku (1955). After his military service he worked between 1956 and 1967 as an assistant professor at the Institute of Zoology and the Faculty of Medicine at the same university. In 1967 he published his fundamental work Classification of the Cribellate spiders and some allied families, with notes on the evolution of the suborder Araneomorpha and defended his dissertation. Without formal supervision, Pekka Lehtinen received support for this work from Ernst Palmén from the University of Helsinki .

In January 1968, Pekka Lehtinen was hired as chief curator at the Zoological Museum of the University of Turku and worked in this position until his retirement in 1999. During this time he also worked as a lecturer in zoology at the Universities of Turku and Helsinki.

Services

After briefly dealing with malacological issues during his studies, Pekka Lehtinen turned to questions relating to the systematics of spiders for his dissertation . During his time at the museum in Turku, he undertook numerous collecting excursions to over 70 countries in order to collect spiders and other invertebrates and to process them scientifically, especially spiders from the Orient and the Pacific region. He was one of the first arachnologists to use evolutionary biology ideas and the electron microscope for researching the systematics of spiders.

Pekka Lehtinen described above 80 spider species and genera and subfamilies Atellopsinae, Cynaeolinae, Eutichurinae, Litisedinae, Machadoniinae, Metaltellinae, Phyxelidinae, Tricholathysinae, Uliodoninae and the families Megadictynidae , Phyxelididae and Titanoecidae .

In addition to his arachnological activities, Pekka Lehtinen was actively involved in nature conservation and as a member of the ICZN .

Because of his many achievements, Pekka Lehtinen has been awarded several prizes, including two-time honorary membership of the International Society of Arachnology , the 2005 Annual Prize of the Risto Tuomikoski Society for Taxonomy, and the First Class Knight of the Order of the Lion of Finland .
