Pelangia mbutaensis is a freshwater fish from the rainbow fish family(Melanotaeniidae). It occurs in the waters of a marshland (Lake Mbuta Basin) near Etna Bay in the southeast of Papua Barat in the Indonesian part of New Guinea.

features

The males of Pelangia mbutaensis measured so far had a standard length of 51.5 to 55.5 mm, females were somewhat smaller with standard lengths of 45.6 to 49.4 mm. Body height and head length are around 30% of the standard length. The body is flattened on the sides. The lower jaw protrudes slightly. The scales are relatively small and arranged in regular rows.

  • Fins formula : dorsal IV – VII, dorsal II 9–12, anals 14–18, pectorals 13–15.

The fish are yellowish-brown in color on the back and sides of the body. They become increasingly silvery towards the belly. A gray, in the front half of the body, more pronounced stripe runs along the sides of the body. There is a silvery stripe underneath. The fins are smoke colored. There is a silver stain on the lower half of the gill cover. The iris is silvery.

The sexual dimorphism in Pelangia mbutaensis is much less pronounced than in other rainbow fish . Males grow a little larger, have a taller body, and the first rays of their first dorsal fin are a little longer. When laid out, they reach just above the first rays of the second dorsal fin, while in females they do not reach there or just barely touch them.

habitat

The terra typica of the species is a small, about 2 to 3 meters wide and half a meter deep stream with a muddy, sometimes stony bottom and sparse vegetation. All around are swamps, some of which are covered with 3 to 4 meter high grasses, small ponds and ponds and low hills. Other inhabitants of the creek are the goldie rainbow fish ( Melanotaenia goldiei ), a hard-headed ( Craterocephalus sp.), Gobies ( Glossogobius sp., Mogurnda sp. And Oxyeleotris fimbriata ), a coral catfish ( Neosilurus sp.) And a parasitic crab ( Cherax sp.). Pelangia mbutaensis is relatively common, but is outdone by the Goldie rainbow fish, which has a population three times as large. When the author of the first description examined the stream, the water had a temperature of 25.8 ° C and a pH value of 6.4.
