Glossogobius ( Gr . "Glossa" = tongue + Gobius = goby) is a genus of fish from the family of gobies and with more than 30 species one of the most biodiverse Grundelgattungen. The species of this genus live in fresh water , in brackish water , and with one species ( Glossogobius circumspectus ) also in the salt water of mangrove stands . The distribution area extends from South Africa through East Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia to the Amur region in the far east of Russia and south to Australia. Glossogobius species are also found on numerous oceanic islands, e.g. B. on Madagascar , Mauritius , Réunion and on the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean, as well as on New Guinea , on the Solomon Islands , on Palau , the Carolines and other Micronesian islands, on Fiji , New Caledonia and Vanuatu .

features

They are elongated fish with flattened heads that reach a length of 4.5 to 80 cm. Glossogobius species have 27 to 30 vertebrae. The mouth is large, its length can reach 10 to 15% of the standard length. The tongue is two-pointed. Characteristic of the genus are 6 longitudinally arranged rows of papillae of the sensory system on the "cheeks" and gill openings that reach to the lower rear edge of the preoperculars .

Way of life

Glossogobius species are primarily bottom-dwelling, predatory fish. Most of the species are restricted to freshwater habitats as adults. The spread of the fish larvae in the sea seems to occur frequently in the genus and explains their widespread distribution. On some large islands and archipelagos, e.g. B. in Madagascar, New Guinea, the Philippines and in the area of the Malili Lake System ( Lake Matano , Lake Mahalona and Lake Towutissei ) on Sulawesi , endemic , pure freshwater forms split into further species in the course of adaptive radiation . The Glossogobius species in the Malili Lakes tend to swim freely and have a large swim bladder .

species

The genus currently (mid-2015) has over 30 described species, but it is assumed that there are around 20 other, previously undescribed species.
