The flat beetles (Peltinae) are a subfamily of the hunting beetles (Trogossitidae).
features
The representatives of the flat beetles are, as the name suggests, extremely flattened. However, this does not apply to all species, for example the small-headed flat beetle (Fig. 1). The beetles reach body lengths of 1.9 to 19 millimeters. Striking the wide pronotum are (twice as wide as the head) and the wide wing covers (elytra). The antennas are 11-membered and end in a three-member end lobe.
Way of life
The flat beetles live mainly under fungal bark on conifers, and more rarely on deciduous trees. Occasionally they are also found in rotten wood. They feed on fungal threads and rotting wood residues.
