Norwegian cartographers, who named it after the name of the Penck Mulde, mapped it using geodetic surveys and aerial photographs of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1949–1952) and aerial photographs of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1952 ) taken between 1958 and 1959. 1960). The indirect namesake is the German geographer Albrecht Penck (1858–1945).
