Pendleton Island is a small island in the Clinch River in Virginia . It is located on the upper course of the river in Scott County and is uninhabited.
In 1983 the conservation organization The Nature Conservancy acquired Pendleton Island along with two neighboring, nameless islets. In total, the reserve has an area of 35 acres (14.2 hectares ), the majority of which is on Pendleton Island. The river arms around the individual islets are important habitats for freshwater mollusks , especially mussels . So far 45 different species of mollusks have been identified, eight of which are considered endangered. One species of mussel is only found around Pendleton Island.
Access to the fully forested islands is restricted.
