Peniocereus chiapensis is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the distribution in the Mexican state of Chiapas .

Peniocereus chiapensis grows shrubby with shoots branching out from the base and reaches heights of 1.7 to 2 meters (rarely up to 3.5 meters). The relatively slender roots are bulbous and about 2 to 4 centimeters in diameter. The two-shaped, green, cylindrical shoots are upright to scattered. They are up to 4 meters long and have a diameter of up to 11.5 centimeters. There are six to nine ribs on young shoots and four to seven (rarely three to eight) ribs on older shoots . The four to nine (rarely up to 15) spines of unequal length are beige or gray and have a reddish-brown tip. They are 1 to 3.5 inches long.

The salver-shaped, yellowish green to white flowers are 8 to 12 centimeters (rarely 7.5 to 13.5 centimeters) long and have a diameter of 2.5 to 3 centimeters. Your pericarpel is humped. The almost spherical or obovate, deep red fruits reach a length of 3.5 to 5.5 centimeters and a diameter of 2.3 to 4 centimeters. They contain a red pulp .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Peniocereus chiapensis is distributed in the Mexican state of Chiapas and in the neighboring department of Huehuetenango in Guatemala, mainly in tropical dry forests at altitudes of 517 to 1320 meters.

It was first described as Acanthocereus chiapensis in 1972 by Helia Bravo Hollis . Carlos Gómez-Hinostrosa and Héctor Manuel Hernández placed the species in the genus Peniocereus in 2005 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
