Peniocereus zopilotensis is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet zopilotensis refers to the distribution in the Cañón del Zopilote.

description

Peniocereus zopilotensis has a shrubby growth with leaning to climbing shoots and bulbous roots . The bare shoots are up to 4 meters long and 1 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter. Black areoles sit on the 16 to 20 ribs . The one or two central spines are reddish brown and 2 to 3 millimeters long. The eight to ten white, needle-shaped radial spines are pressed and 1.5 to 3 millimeters long

The tubular to funnel-shaped, whitish to cream-colored flowers appear on the side of the shoots and open at night. Their tuberous pericarpel is somewhat covered with white wool and with a few thorns at the base. The pear-shaped to elongated, scarlet-red fruits reach a length of up to 3.5 centimeters and a diameter of 2 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Peniocereus zopilotensis is common in the Mexican state of Guerrero .

The first description as Wilcoxia zopilotensis was in 1969 by Jorge Meyrán . Franz Buxbaum placed the species in the genus Peniocereus in 1976 . A synonym is Neoevansia zopilotensis (J.Meyrán) Sánchez-Mej.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
