Pepita polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pepita Polka is a polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 138). The work was performed for the first time on August 1, 1853 in the Zum Sperl dance hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The polka was composed on the occasion of the guest performance of the Spanish dancer Pepita de Oliva in Vienna. This delighted the Viennese audience on the stage of the Carltheater evening after evening for 30 days . Johann Strauss took up the general enthusiasm in order to arrange a polka from the music played during the performance of the dancer. This was then premiered by his brother Josef on August 1, 1853 in the Zum Sperl dance hall . Later it was forgotten. This was also due to the fact that the composer's many compositions sometimes displaced each other from the concert schedule. There was simply an oversupply of such works. In the meantime, the orchestral version of the polka has also been lost. This was not found again until the middle of the 20th century.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 13 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
