Peraia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Peraia ( Greek  Περαία , the opposite [land] ') in ancient Greece landscapes were referred to, which were opposite or on the other side (Gr. Peran πέραν) a river or a sea road.

The mainland areas in their possession opposite the islands were often called such as the Thasitic Peraia opposite Thasos or the Rhodian Peraia, the Carian coast opposite the island of Rhodes , and the coast of Mysia opposite Tenedos ( Peraia Tenediōn Περαία Τενεδίων). Other areas of the name were the area of Corinth east of the Isthmos (today Perachora ) and the landscape east of the upper Jordan in Transjordan .

In modern Greece, five local authorities had the corresponding modern Greek name Perea, including the city of Perea, which lies opposite Thessaloniki on the Thermaic Gulf and is now the center of the Thermaikos municipality  .
