The Percy Island fruit bat ( Pteropus brunneus ) is an extinct species of fruit bat that was endemic to the Australian island of Percy Island .
description
The Percy Island fruit bat reached a length of 210 mm, a forearm length of 118 mm and a weight of 200 grams. The length of the ears was two centimeters. The fur was pretty short almost everywhere. The flight membrane between the thighs (interfemoral skin) was very narrow in the middle and covered by the fur. The hairless ears were triangular and bluntly pointed. The fur was yellowish brown on the head, back, chest and stomach. It was a little lighter on the neck. The wings were black and gray.
status
The Percy Island flying fox is known only from the holotype collected in 1859 on Percy Island, northeast of Queensland . The taxon is listed as extinct on the IUCN Red List and the Australian Endangered Species Protection Act of 1992. However, it is still unclear whether the species is of Australian origin and there are doubts about its validity, especially since the Percy Island fruit bat looks very similar to the species Pteropus scapulatus .
