George Edward Dobson

George Edward Dobson (born September 4, 1848 in Edgeworthstown , County Longford , Ireland , † November 26, 1895 in West Malling , Kent , England) was an Irish zoologist, photographer and army doctor. Dobson's main research interests were insectivores and bats .

Live and act

George Edward Dobson was the eldest son of Parke Dobson, a doctor from Killinagh , County Westmeath . Before studying biology and medicine at Trinity College in Dublin , he was trained at the Royal School Enniskillen . In 1866 he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree, in 1867 he graduated with a Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery and in 1875 with a Master of Arts. In 1868 he joined the British Army medical service and was stationed in India. In 1872 he was transferred to the Andamans, where he got the opportunity to take anthropological photographs of the Andaman islanders . In 1874 he became a member of the Linnean Society of London . In 1876 he returned to England and published his work Monograph of the Asiatic Chiroptera . In 1878 he became a curator at the Royal Victoria Museum in Netley and published the book Catalog of the Chiroptera in the Collection of the British Museum. Between 1882 and 1890 he wrote the Monograph of the Insectivora, Systematic and Anatomical , of which he was only able to complete the first three volumes for health reasons. In 1883 he became a member of the Royal Society . He was also a corresponding member of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and the Biological Society of Washington . In 1888 he retired from military service with the military rank of medical officer .

Dedication names

In 1898 Theodore Sherman Palmer named the bat genus Dobsonia in honor of George Edward Dobson. Other species named after him are Sphaerotheca dobsoni (1882 by George Albert Boulenger ), the Dobson-Kleintenrek ( Microgale dobsoni , 1884 by Oldfield Thomas ) and the Dobsonian epaulette bat ( Epomops dobsonii , 1889 by José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage ).
