Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen
Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen (born July 6, 1834 in Teignmouth , † December 2, 1923 ) was an English topographer, geologist and explorer. He was the son of Robert Alfred Cloyne Godwin-Austen .
In 1851 Godwin-Austen joined the army and then served for many years with the Survey of India , the Indian land surveying agency. In his honor, a glacier at the foot of the K2 in the Karakoram was named " Godwin Austen Glacier ". His name was wrongly used on some maps to denote the mountain itself.
He was also a good draftsman and also painted watercolors. One of his watercolors, The Baltoro Glacier, Karakoram, was auctioned at Christie's in London on September 26, 2007 and fetched £ 6,250 GBP (€ 8,918 EUR). The authenticity is certified by an inscription on the reverse: "Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen 1834-1923 surveyor and discoverer of glaciers in India".
Godwin-Austen was also interested in natural history and published a corresponding book on India. He was also an ornithologist and published the book Birds of Assam , in which he was the first to describe some species of birds.
Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen had the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, was a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), and the Zoological Society of London (FZS), and the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS). He was also a member of the British Ornithologists' Union (MBOU).
