The Dobson Epaulettenflughund ( Epomops dobsonii ) is a bat , which in Southern Africa occurs.

features

With a head body length of 137 to 168 mm, a missing tail and a weight of 65 to 158 g, the species is a medium-sized flying fox. The length of the forearms is 80.5 to 100 mm, the hind feet are 22 to 26 mm long and the length of the ears is 25 to 30 mm. Characteristic are three transverse ridges on the palate between the molars and two further ridges behind the molars. The Dobsonian epaulette bat has gray-brown fur on the top and pale cinnamon-colored fur with a gray shade on the underside. Females are distinguished by a gray throat from males, who have a dark gray-brown throat. In this fruit bat, the ears, the membranes and the bare areas of the nose are dark brown. The number of molars is three in the upper jaw, while there are five molars in the lower jaw.

As with other epaulette bats, there are white or yellow spots in front of the ears, and in males there are white or yellow tufts of hair on the shoulders.

distribution

The distribution area of ​​the Dobsonian epaulet bat reaches from Angola to southern Tanzania and northwestern Mozambique . In mountains, the species is usually found up to 1500 meters above sea level. In the south of Tanzania it was registered at an altitude of 1890 meters. This flying fox lives in savannahs and in areas with a denser tree population, e.g. B. in the Miombo landscape in which plants of the genera Brachystegia , Julbernardia and Isoberlinia predominate.

Way of life

Little is known about the behavior of the species. Groups will probably form at the resting place. As with other fruit bats, the diet consists primarily of fruits.

Presumably individual specimens are hunted and sold as bushmeat . The Dobsonian epaulette bat is known from various protected areas. The IUCN lists the species as Least Concern .
