Pereskia lychnidiflora is a species of plant in the genus Pereskia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet lychnidiflora means, Greek lychnos lamp, lamp; with flowers like lights; also possible: flowers like Lychnis (light carnation) '. Spanish common names are "Árbol del Matrimonio", "Cruz del Matrimonia", "Guititache", "Manzanote", "Mateado", "Mateares", "Matíal" and "Patilón".

Pereskia lychnidiflora grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of up to 10 meters. The rough and cracked trunk has a diameter of 30 to 40 centimeters. The indistinctly stalked leaves appear individually or in pairs from the areoles . The elliptical to obovate leaf blade is 2 to 8 inches long and 1 to 4 inches wide. The nerve of the leaf blade is approximately palmate and has two to six lateral nerves. On the branches there are one to three thorns per areole that are 2 to 7 centimeters long. On the trunk, 10 to 30 spread thorns are formed per areole, which have a length of 3 to 12 centimeters.
The flowers are single and terminal. The bright yellowish orange flowers reach a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. The pear-shaped to spherical, greenish-yellow, almost smooth fruits have a diameter of 2.5 to 4 centimeters. Their pericarp is somewhat leathery.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Pereskia lychnidiflora is common in the Mexican states of Guerrero and Oaxaca as well as in Guatemala , El Salvador , Honduras , Nicaragua and Costa Rica in the lowland rainforest from sea level to an altitude of 1200 meters.
The first description was in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . A synonym is Rhodocactus lychnidiflorus (DC.) FMKnuth .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
