Perimele (daughter of Hippodamas)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Perimele ( Greek  Περιμήλη ) is a nymph from Greek mythology . She is the daughter of Hippodamas and was loved by the river god Acheloos , who secretly met her. When her father discovered their relationship, he pushed her off a cliff into the sea. Acheloos held her over the waves for a while and implored Poseidon (Neptune) to help her. This turned it into an island that bore her name and belongs to the Echinads .

The story is summed up succinctly on a copper engraving entitled Perimele Acheloo amata in insulam by Johann Wilhelm Baur (1607–1640) from his Bellissimum Ovidii theatrum , a series of illustrations of Ovid's Metamorphoses :

The perimele of their shame
makes them a land in the lake
