Pearl weight

The pearl weight determines the size of cultured and natural pearls and represents the differences for the trade. Today, different weight systems such as carat , Kan , Chego and Mangalin are known. The word “pearl weight” is also used as a synonym for a small mass.

Abas

The abas was a pearl weight in Persia . It was:

  • 1 Abas = 3 4/5 As = ⅞ carat (Prussian)
  • 1 Abas = 0.1458 grams = 3 1/30 Aß (Dutch)

Calanchi

The old pearl weight Galanchi was used in the French administered city of Pondichery in East India . It was:

  • 1 calanchi = 20 machadis = 0.14 grams

Chego

Chego was a weight for pearls on the Indian island of Goa administered by Portugal and was comparable to the carat. It was:

  • 5 (4) Chego = 1 carat
  • 12 carats = 100 Chego

The measure did not follow any rule when equating to the carat and was not linear, because 24 carats corresponded to 400 chegos. There was a value for each number of carats. Selection of some values ​​for comparison:

  • 5 carats = 21 Chego
  • 10 carats = 69 Chego
  • 18 carats = 225 Chego
  • 24 carats = 400 Chego
  • 36 carats = 900 Chego

Chouw

For the old pearl measure in Surate, the former district capital in the British-Indian Presidency of Bombay , the following applied:

  • 1 Chouw = 1 3/5 Anna = 7/123 carats = ¼ Aß (Dutch)
  • 1 Retty = 13 ¼ Chouw
  • 1 tang = 330 chouw
  • 1 Tang = 24 Ruttees = 96 Quarters = 384 Anna = 4.6655 grams
  • 1 tang = 24 rutters = 480 vassas = 30.32575 grams

Mangelin

Mangelin was also calculated as the old pearl weight. The weight in Madras , a former province of British India, was 0.3888 grams . Other sources put the value at 0.349 grams.

Metekal

The metekal is known by different names, including Mitigal and Mitikal.

The following applies in Algeria :

  • 1 Metekal = 97 Aß (Dutch)

In Syria and Tripoli :

  • 1 Metekal = 99 2/5 Aß (Dutch)

Onca

The onca was a Castilian jewel and pearl weight and was determined as follows:

  • 1 Onca = 140 Quilates = 560 Granos = 27.96 grams

Quilat

The pearl weight quilat was in use in Portugal (1 quilat = 4 granos = 0.20583 grams) and in Spain (1 quilat = 0.1997 grams).
