The beach in Peroj

Peroj is a small town in Croatia with about 600 inhabitants near Pula, about 8 km away, and is right next to the larger fishing village of Fažana . From the town center one has a view of the Brijuni archipelago , which can be reached by excursion boat. Peroj is a very quiet holiday resort, with smaller markets, inns and bars.

The place already existed in the time of the Romans , who called the village Pedrolo . After only 3 people lived in the village during a major plague epidemic , the place was settled by Albanians in 1657, who fled from the Ottomans in 1657. The originally Albanian residents of the Catholic faith gave up their Albanian nationality after the second generation. After that, Orthodox Montenegrins were settled. In 1787 they redesigned the former Catholic Church into their Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Spyridon . Because of this, the place also has the only Orthodox church in Istria .
