Homology family Pertactin
Parent taxon Bordetella

Pertactin is a protein that in Bordetella - bacteria in the outer cell membrane sits. It is used for attachment ( adhesion ) to host cells (a so-called adhesin ). Pertactin is a human immunogen and antibodies against pertactin show a protective effect against Bordetella infections in animal models . The advantages over established pertussis vaccinations are, however, questioned.

The pertactin precursor contains a β-barrel domain which is separated by peptidases after transport into the periplasm and presumably forms a porin in the outer bacterial membrane through which the separated pertactin part is transported to the outside. Pertactin itself also consists almost exclusively of β-sheets, which together form the largest β-helix known to date .
