Pertamina gas station in Indonesia

PT Pertamina (Persero) ( Perusahaan Tambang Minyak Negara ) is an Indonesian joint stock company with headquarters in Jakarta , which is 100% state-owned. The company mines and refines Indonesia's oil and gas reserves . Pertamina was created in August 1968 through the merger of PN Pertamin (founded in 1961) and PN Permina (founded in 1957).

Company history

Article 33 of the Indonesian Constitution of 1945 stipulates that the land, water and natural resources belong to the state and should be used for the benefit of the people. Thereafter, the Indonesian government has the task of managing the country's oil and gas reserves. On December 10, 1957, the state-owned company Permina was founded. The Indonesian Colonel Ibnu Sutowo headed the company management . Ibnu Sutowo was the second man behind General Abdul Haris Nasution in the Indonesian military. With Sutowo's position in the state-owned company Permina , the Indonesian military tried to control the oil industry in Indonesia. The company sold crude oil nationwide as a company in Indonesia in the following years in a monopoly position. Permina founded the Apprentice Technical School (Sekolah Kader Teknik) in Brandan to recruit experts in the petroleum industry. To achieve this goal, the Oil Academy was founded in Bandung in 1962 . In the 1960s, the state monopoly of oil production was relaxed and foreign oil companies were allowed access in Indonesia. In 1968 the companies Permina and Pertamin merged and the state-owned company Pertamin was created. After the merger in 1968, the company's oil production increased steadily.

However, peak oil was reached in Indonesia in 1977 , but Indonesia remained an important oil exporter and member of OPEC . However, due to strong population and economic growth, Indonesia finally became a net importer of crude oil in 2007 and then announced its exit from OPEC in 2008. Thanks to the use of new technology and the help of foreign oil companies, it has been possible in recent years to keep the production level more or less constant and to halt the previously dramatic decline in production. At the same time, attempts are being made to use natural gas as a substitute for crude oil, as Indonesia has large natural gas reserves and is one of the largest natural gas exporters in the world. The TransJakarta Express bus line , for example, is largely operated with buses converted to natural gas, as Indonesian gas production is growing rapidly and is expected to continue to increase at a rapid pace. In April 2018, a devastating oil spill occurred off the coast of the Indonesian island of Borneo after a leak in a pipeline on the seabed caused a large amount of oil to escape. After the official call of emergency, the oil slick was set on fire, which is said to have killed five fishermen off the coast of Balikpapa.
