The Perth Immigration Detention Center is very close to the Perth Airport in the district of Redcliffe in Perth , the state capital of Western Australia . It was originally founded in 1981 to briefly detain illegal fishermen, mainly from Indonesia. Meanwhile especially be there boat people detained.

There is also the Perth Immigration Residential Housing Facility not far from the internment camp , in which asylum-seeking families with children can be accommodated.

The Australian Human Rights Commission believes the camp is unsuitable for long-term immigration detention at this center. When she visited it in July 2008, she found that certain improvements were being made that the Commission had asked for for years. At the time, the commission determined that plant troughs had been set up since their last stay, new furniture had been set up in the dining and sick rooms and books had been available in the lounge. However, the structural problems of the camp have not been resolved. The bedrooms are too small and too cramped. There is no outside area for sporting activities or to relax, instead only two inner courtyards with no view of the outside. There is no separate room inside the building that is used for relaxation or training. There have been two personal computers for two years now, and that is not enough. Furthermore, there is no separate room in which the occupants can stay undisturbed with visitors. There is also no separate TV room. According to the standard requirements of the Australian immigration authorities, the then Department of Immigration and Citizenship , the inmates also lack a space to practice their religion.

Occupancy

The occupancy is usually 27 people, which can be increased to 42 at short notice if necessary. In July 2008, 21 inmates were detained at the time of the Human Rights Commission's stay, two of them for more than 18 months. On January 31, 2017, 28 people were counted in the detention center, including 21 men and 7 women.

The currently incumbent Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton from the Liberal Party of Australia announced at the end of April 2016 that he would close the Perth Immigration Detention Center in Perth in the foreseeable future if the occupancy figures continue to decline.
