Australian camp for asylum seekers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list contains current and closed Australian camps for asylum seekers . These camps are actually immigration detention centers. Because there the so-called boat people are being held in immigration custody, where they are being held without legal entitlement. You cannot raise or sue your asylum request in Australian courts.

With the Migration Amendment (Excision from Migration Zone) Act 2001 , the Australian Parliament removed the outlying areas of Ashmore and Cartier Islands , Cocos Islands and Christmas Island , although Australian territories , from its migration zone . This means that boat people who land there cannot apply for asylum and are committing a crime under Australian law. You can be deported or taken into immigration detention at any time. According to the MIGRATION ACT 1958 , this zone could be expanded at any time by a further legal act.

There are two camps outside Australian territory for the so-called boat people, the Nauru Regional Processing Center in the small island state of Nauru and the Manus Regional Processing Center in Papua New Guinea . The internment camp on the island of Manus has to be closed until October 31, 2017 according to a supreme judgment of the Constitutional Court of Papua Newquinea.

In January 2014, Scott Morrison , the Australian Minister for Immigration under Prime Minister Tony Abbott , announced the closure of three detention centers. At the end of February 2014, the Scherger camps in Queensland , Port Augusta in South Australia and Leonora in Western Australia were to be closed. Asylum seekers from these camps were distributed to the other Australian internment camps. The Ponteville camp in Tasmania was closed in September 2013.

The current Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton from the Liberal Party of Australia announced at the end of April 2016 that he would close the internment camps Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Center near Melbourne , Villawood Immigration Detention Center in Sydney and Perth Immigration Residential Housing Facility in Perth in the foreseeable future, provided that the occupancy numbers continue to decrease. This is a success of the stop the boats policy .
