Plague cross in Zeutschach

The plague cross in Zeutschach , Styria is a rectangular brick niche shrine and not a special field cross . It is a listed building and was probably erected as a Trinity Cross after 1716. The squat looking shrine is about 3 m high and is about 100 m before the entrance to Zeutschach and is covered with wooden shingles.

The last epidemic of the plague occurred in the area around Zeutschach between 1714 and 1716, but it did not reach Zeutschach. In 1715 an altar was set up in front of the medieval parish church as a precaution and a plague pastor was employed. The plague cross is said to have been erected as thanks for the sparing of the people in the area before the plague epidemic.

In the four niches of the wayside shrine are wooden panels with painted Passion pictures depicting the crowning of thorns , carrying the cross , crucifixion and the descent from the cross of Jesus Christ .
