Church building

Outside

The church 1043  m above sea level. A. is a medieval stone building free-standing on all sides, which has dominated the center of Zeutschach largely unchanged for more than 800 years and is surrounded all around by a cemetery with a surrounding wall. The building has a steep hipped roof covered with wood shingles and five large, dominant arched windows.

The choir was not built any deeper than the nave. The door of the west portal (main entrance) is made of wood and the Roman spiral bands are said to date from around 1200.

Above the west portal is a sgraffito by the Fohnsdorf artist Krenn.

The choir is oriented to the northeast. A round window is directed into the choir , which throws interesting light effects on the high altar and creates them for the interior.

tower

The square wooden tower attached to the south-west of the nave has a pointed gable helmet and four arched sound openings. It is not open to the public.

inner space

The choir is flanked on the right by a side altar on a low plinth. The choir and side altar are separated from the nave by only one step. The floor pattern of the choir does not differ from that of the nave. The simple stone folk altar fits into the room in an open and easily accessible manner.

On the high altar above the tabernacle there is a central statue of St. Aegydius. In the church there is also a small baroque statue of St. Aegydius from the 1st half of the 18th century.

The side altar (cross altar) comes from the middle of the 18th century by the Judenburg sculptor Balthasar Prandtstätter and shows the crucified Christ and biblical figures from the New Testament .

The pulpit, which is no longer in use today, shows the statue of St. Benedict , the founder of the Benedictine order.

The apostle chandelier (representation of the twelve apostles ) between the pulpit and gallery dates from the 2nd half of the 18th century. It was carved by the Carinthian sculptor Krasnegger in 1851.

The stations of the cross are enamel work on copper by Bernward Schmid (OSB) from the Seckau goldsmiths ( Seckau Abbey ).

Next to the west entrance is an exposed Gothic wall painting from the mid-14th century. Between the pulpit and the gallery there is a picture “Painful Mother”, oil painting from 1853. Below the wall painting at the west entrance there is a baroque font from 1724. The font in the classical style was made about half a century later and shows the scene of the baptism Christ.

The five church windows show representations of the Annunciation - Christmas - Resurrection - Easter, various saints and evangelists.
