Peter A. Munch

Peter Andreas Munch (born December 19, 1908 in Nes , † January 10, 1984 in Pleasant Hill , Tennessee ) was a Norwegian - American sociologist . Munch published mainly in the field of cultural anthropology , agricultural and maritime sociology and published The Sociological Quarterly in 1960–64 . Life

He first studied in Oslo , acquired the academic degree of candidate in theology in 1932 and married Helene Stephansen in 1934 (a lifelong marriage with then three children). 1937-38 Munch took part in the Norwegian expedition to Tristan da Cunha . 1943-44 he was interned by the German occupying forces in the Grini camp near Oslo, then resumed his studies, published in 1945 (theoretically based on Ferdinand Tönnies ) his first book, the study Sociology of Tristan da Cunha near Dybwad (Oslo), and became Dr. phil. PhD .

He then studied Semitic languages ​​at the Universities of Oxford and Wittenberg and from 1947 continued his university career in the USA as a sociologist . In 1951 he was appointed professor at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and in 1957 at the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where he worked until his retirement in 1984. His extensive collection on the island world of the South Atlantic is in the care of Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri.
