Peter Amann (born August 13, 1941 in Munich ; † December 13, 2019 in Alsbach-Hähnlein ) was a German civil engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering .

Life

Amann studied civil engineering at the TH Darmstadt with a diploma in 1966 and specializing in structural engineering. After that he was in the construction industry. In 1975 he did his doctorate in Darmstadt under Herbert Breth on the settlement of Frankfurt skyscrapers. He worked with Breth on the numerical modeling of deep foundations . Rolf Katzenbach was also part of the Darmstadt group at the time . He then worked in Breth's engineering office before opening his own engineering office. With his engineering office he was internationally active, especially in the Middle East. His projects included deep excavations and foundations, tunnels, dams and landfills. In 1990 he became a full professor for foundation engineering and soil mechanics at the ETH Zurich as successor to Jachen Huder. In 2003 he retired early at his own request.

He dealt with special processes in civil engineering, the interaction of soil and structure in foundations, barriers in environmental geotechnics (such as landfills) and geotechnics in road construction.

In 2000 he received the Telford Prize with Lorenz Edelmann and Michael Hertweck.
