Peter Franaszek

Peter A. Franaszek (* around 1940 ) is an American computer scientist . He is known for pioneering work in the restricted channel coding (Constrained Channel Coding).

Franaszek studied at Brown University with a bachelor's degree in 1962 and received his doctorate in electrical engineering (On Time Varying Linear Systems) from Princeton University in 1966 with Bede Liu . From 1965 to 1968 he was at Bell Laboratories and from 1968 at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center of IBM and a member of the IBM Academy of Technology.

1973/74 he was visiting professor at Stanford University .

Some common coding methods for information come from him, for example the 8b10b code (with Albert Widmer ) in telecommunications (such as Gigabit Ethernet, in ESCON from IBM and Fiber Channel) or the (2,7) - RLL code in hard drives and CD drives.

He received IBM Outstanding Innovation Awards for Fragment Reduction Algorithms, Network Theory, Concurrency Control Algorithms, RLL, the 8B / 10B Code, and Compressed Memory Machine. He holds over 50 patents and has published around 45 scientific papers.

In 2002 he received the Paris Kanellakis Prize , the IEEE Emanuel R. Piore Award in 1989 and the Richard W. Hamming Medal in 2009 . He is a fellow of the IEEE .
