Peter Selwyn Gummer, Baron Chadlington (born August 24, 1942 ) is a British businessman and politician.

life and career

Gummer was born on August 24, 1942, the son of Selwyn Gummer , a Church of England minister , and his wife Margaret. Gummer has two brothers, John Gummer, Baron Deben , past chairman of the Conservative Party , and Mark Selwyn Gummer. He studied human sciences and theology at Selwyn College (Cambridge) with the aim of becoming a priest. a. Having read about Albert Camus , he changed his mind. He graduated with a Master of Arts and became a journalist.

Career

During his journalistic work in a business editorial office, he discovered that working in industry was more attractive than journalism and he switched jobs. After several years of work in various companies, he founded the PR company Shandwick in 1974 and became its managing director.

In seven years, Shandwick became the UK's largest public relations firm and was converted into a public company in 1984. In 1984 the company was sold to the Interpublic Group of Companies and is now part of the Huntsworth Group .

He was initially chairman of the board of directors of Huntsworth and should be his successor after the resignation of CEO Richard Nichols. Gummer resigned from office on May 12, 2005 and did not accept the post on the board.

In addition to his PR activities, he was a director at Britax , a director at Bank Halifax and a visiting professor at the University of Gloucestershire . He became a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations , the Institute of Directors , the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Royal Society of Arts . In September 1996 Gummer became General Director of the Royal Opera House . On the occasion of a report by the Culture, Media and Sports Committee of the House of Commons , which judged the management of the Royal Opera House to be an abyss of incompetence, disastrous financial planning and wrong decisions, Gummer resigned from his office in December 1997. On October 16, 1996 he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Chadlington , of Dean in the County of Oxfordshire, and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since .
