Peter Harbison (archaeologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Harbison (born January 14, 1939 in Dublin ) is an Irish archaeologist and art historian. He is best known for his Guide to the Monuments of Ireland, which has been an indispensable companion for tourists in Ireland since 1970 until today. He is a member of the Royal Irish Academy , Honorary Fellow of the Royal Hibernian Academy of Art and Honorary Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin .

Harbison received his doctorate on July 29, 1964 at the University of Marburg in Prehistory and Early History with the dissertation "The copper and bronze finds of the chalcolithic and early bronze age in Ireland". In 1965/66 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . From 1966 to 1984 he was an archaeologist on the Irish Tourist Board and then became the editor of Ireland of the Welcomes magazine . From 1986 to 1990 he chaired the Irish Heritage Commission, which is an important link between politics and science, including the professional associations. This also includes the Royal Irish Academy , of which he is a member and of which he was vice-chairman from 1992 to 1993.

His main scientific work is the three-volume publication The High Crosses of Ireland from 1992. However, in addition to his monument guide, Harbison became widely known through numerous publications aimed at the general public, which give an introduction to the early history of Ireland and its art monuments. In 1978, together with Homan Potterton , the director of the Irish National Gallery, and Jeanne Sheehy, he published his first art volume Irish Art and Architecture at Thames & Hudson , for which he took over the art eras up to 1600. His 1988 book Pre-Christian Ireland on the pre-Christian history of Ireland won the British Archaeological Book Award that same year . Other important art volumes include The Golden Age of Irish Art, on medieval art from 600–1200, and Ireland's Treasures .
