Peter Hill (born June 4, 1945 in Askern ) is a former British cyclist and specialist in individual time trials .
Athletic career
As a boy, Peter Hill first played football, but then bought a racing bike with his first wage at the age of 15 , as his friends also did cycling. In 1962 he won his first race. After a cycling holiday in Norway in the same year, he did his first time trial on a bike with a fixed gear , completing 248 miles in twelve hours . In 1963 he won the overall ranking of the British Best All-Rounder time trial competition for the first time and was able to repeat this success the following year. The award ceremony took place in London's Royal Albert Hall .
In 1964 Hill was appointed to the British national team to take part in the Tour of the Netherlands . From there he sought contact with André Boucher, the coach of Jacques Anquetil , who brought Hill into a cycling-loving family in Normandy . There he trained with the Sotteville cycling club . In 1965 and 1966 he took second place at the Grand Prix des Nations among the amateurs , and in 1965 also the Grand Prix de France Time Trial and the Pont-Audemer Chrono . He won the yellow jersey at the Tour de l'Avenir in 1966 and finished 17th in the amateur world championships at the Nürburgring .
In 1967 Peter Hill signed a professional contract with Peugeot-BP-Michelin , the team of his compatriot Tom Simpson, and drove all the spring classics. He started the Tour de France only once , but gave up during the fifth stage. In the same year he became British runner-up in road racing. In 1968, to his great disappointment, he was not nominated for the tour by his team, but won the Tour of Northwestern Switzerland and finished 40th in the Tour de Suisse .
Hill then ended his cycling career and took a job in an English company in Normandy. He still lives in France today (as of 2017).
