Peter E. Hodgson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Edward Hodgson (born November 27, 1928 in London , † December 8, 2008 ) was a British nuclear physicist .

Hodgson studied physics at Imperial College London with a bachelor's degree in 1948 and a doctorate in 1951 with George Paget Thomson . In his dissertation he was one of the first to identify the K meson and its decay into three pions, and to estimate its mass. He then carried out research on nuclear physics with Harrie Massey at University College London and, due to his work, was brought to Oxford University by Rudolf Peierls and Denys Wilkinson in 1958 , where he led the group for theoretical nuclear physics, became a lecturer and a fellow of Corpus Christi College . He stayed there for the rest of his career.

He also wrote books on environmental problems and (as a staunch Catholic) science and religion and philosophy of physics. He was active in the British Atomic Scientists Association and from 1952 to 1959 in their council and 1953 to 1955 editor of their journal. In his endeavor to combine science and religion, he was affiliated with the Templeton Foundation , the Newman Association, and he was President and Bulletin of the Pax Romana Science Secretariat .

During his time at Oxford he received a D.Sc. of the University of London .
