Peter Kamnitzer

Peter Kamnitzer (born November 27, 1922 in Berlin ; died February 23, 2016 in Israel ) was an American violist of German-Jewish origin, member of the LaSalle String Quartet and university professor.

Life

Peter Kamnitzer, who started playing the violin at the age of six, was a youth member of the orchestra of the Jewish Cultural Association of the Free Hanseatic City of Danzig . After fleeing the Nazis from Germany to the USA in 1941, he studied viola at the Manhattan School of Music from 1941 to 1944 , became first violist in 1944 and violist with the string quartet of the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra in 1945. In 1947 he studied viola with Milton Katims at the Juilliard School of Music and became a member of the LaSalle Quartet, of which he was a violist together with Walter Levin (1st violin), Henry Meyer (2nd violin) and various cellists until its dissolution in 1988 . With them he taught first from 1949 to 1953 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs and then violin, viola, chamber music and music history from 1953 to 1988 at the College of Music in Cincinnati (from 1962: University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Cincinnati ), made her ensemble into one of the most important and influential local string quartets in the USA and from 1954 onwards, after her first European tour, became internationally famous for the interpretations and their repertoire, especially of the Second Viennese School .

After 1988 Peter Kamnitzer was a member of the jury of the Borciani Quartet competition in Italy as well as other major music prizes and taught chamber music in Austria and Israel.
