Peter Kaufmann (ski racer)

Peter Kaufmann (born April 8, 1917 in Grindelwald ; † July 9, 2005 there ) was a Swiss ski racer , tourist expert and politician . In 1944 he became Swiss downhill champion .

biography

Kaufmann grew up with three siblings in the Grindelwald district behind Itramen . He became a mountain guide and ski instructor and, like his brother Fritz , successfully took part in ski races in the 1940s . He started in the elite class for the first time at the Swiss Championships in 1943, finished sixth in the downhill, seventh in the slalom and fourth in the combination. Kaufmann celebrated his greatest success in 1944 when he became Swiss downhill champion at the 38th Swiss ski race in Gstaad . In slalom and combined he took third place. The next year he was sixth in the downhill as well as in the slalom and fifth in the combination at the Swiss championships. Together with his brother, he ran racing courses at the Grindelwald Ski School and for the Grindelwald Ski Club.

In 1948 Peter Kaufmann married Cécile Schmid from Oberfrick . The couple had eight children and were tenants of the Berghaus Männlichen from 1955 to 1963 . In 1970 her daughter Rita and her husband took over the lease, still with the help of their parents. Kaufmann was also involved in tourism and politics. For 29 years he was President of the Lägerlift Board of Directors, a ski lift in the Kleine Scheidegg -Männlichen ski area , whose construction he helped initiate, 25 years President of the electricity supplier Elektra Itramen-Männlichen and eight years a member of the municipal council. He was also a member of the initiative committee for the construction of the Grindelwald – Männlichen gondola and was on the board of directors of the railway for twelve years.
