Peter Kellnberger (* 1921 in Plattling ; † 1982 in Sweden ) was a German armed forces deserter, teacher, author and artist.

Life

Kellnberger was the son of a psychiatric nurse and craftsman in Pankofen. After elementary school, he passed the Abitur at the secondary school in Deggendorf in 1940. After several months of hard work and work in a Regensburg newspaper, Kellnberger was drafted into the Air Force in 1941 and served in the following years at various flight schools in Germany and other German-occupied countries. In his free time he was active as a writer and regularly wrote letters to friends and old acquaintances. In 1943, statements in these letters led to his arrest and a court case against Kellnberger for undermining military strength. However, due to the very good assessment of his superiors, the untrustworthiness of the prosecutor and the quality of his lawyer, he was acquitted. The trial against him, as well as a lot of information brought to him about the horrors of the Nazi regime, made Kellnberger decide not to fight for the German Reich but to flee abroad.

On September 1, 1944, he escaped from an air base in Jutland, Denmark, to which he had meanwhile been transferred, to Sweden in a single-seat school machine. There he was arrested and placed in an internment camp, but was able to start normal work in 1945. The first literary publications also fell in 1945. In 1947 Kellnberger married his Swedish partner Constance, further publications followed. In 1948, after a short stay in Deggendorf, he returned to Sweden, appalled by the decline in custom and morality. After passing the state examination at the Swedish University of Lund, where Kellnberger matriculated in 1945, he earned his living as a teacher. At the same time he continued to work as a writer, painter and photographer. Peter Kellnberger died in 1982 of an incurable disease.
