Knowles comes from a rugby- oriented family. His father was a professional at the local rugby club, but when it became apparent that Peter and his brother Cyril had a talent for football, interest within the family quickly shifted in that direction. After a training camp in 1961, he was in good contact with the coach of the Wolverhampton Wanderers. At the age of 17, in October 1962, he signed his first six-year contract there.

In the 1965/66 season Knowles had to contend with serious injuries. Despite the absence of several weeks, he still scored 19 goals this year. In 1967, after the introduction of FIFA, he took part in the mini-season in the United States , where he played for the Los Angeles Wolves and helped his team win the title. The following year he was back in the USA, this time for the Kansas City Spurs .

Through this contact he stayed in the United States for a season because it was foreseeable that his old contract would not be renewed after a manager change at his home club.
